Draft legislation to create privacy zones around abortion clinics

privacy zones

SHANE Rattenbury has tabled draft legislation in the Legislative Assembly to create privacy zones around medical facilities that provide abortion services, to allow women to access legal medical services privately and without fear of interference or judgement.

“I released this draft legislation last month and have already received substantial feedback in support of the proposal for privacy zones around medical facilities,” Shane said.

“It is clear that the community recognises this is a real and longstanding issue that is affecting women’s access to safe and legal health services.

“The legislation aims to ensure women can access safe medical abortions without running a gauntlet of prejudice and unwarranted judgement, and supports the basic human right to seek and receive medical treatment unimpeded.

“The bill defines a specific area (privacy zone) around an approved medical facility within which protests and other public displays regarding abortion will be prohibited during specified time periods.

“The limitations will only apply to specific subject matter relating to abortion and related health services and apply only to a small geographic area. The limitations do not prevent a person from protesting in other places or outside the times specified.

“I strongly support the right to protest and I encourage and welcome a diversity of views and opinions on issues of public interest. However we must ensure the expression of views do not infringe on an individual’s right to access health services.

“This is about protecting the legal right to medical privacy and the human right to make choices about an individual’s own health. It’s time our laws protected those rights.

“I encourage all interested parties to continue to provide feedback on the bill, which will be debated later this year,” said Mr Rattenbury.
