Evacuations in Garran

FIRE has forced the evacuation of an apartment building tonight in Woden.

ACT Fire & Rescue was alerted to the incident in Eldridge Crescent at Garran just before 11 o’clock.

Fire crews arrived a short time later to find a vehicle alight in a carport under the building.

Fire crews have prevented the fire from spreading and now have it under control.

There are several ACT Fire & Rescue pumpers on scene along with the HAZMAT unit and commanders.

An estimated 25 people remain evacuated.


The fire is extinguished.

Firefighters are starting to ventilate smoke from the building and will conduct atmospheric monitoring. They’ll ensure the premises is clear before letting occupants back inside.

The cause is unknown at this time but will be investigated.
