Geoscience Australia Open Day this Sunday

CANBERRA’S keenly anticipated Geoscience Australia Open Day is on this Sunday.

The day offers the opportunity to mix with Australia’s top geoscientists, learn how a dancing robot helps your GPS, or find out how earthquakes are detected.

Visitors to the open day can pan for gold, become seafloor detectives, learn about geoscience careers and find out what goes on inside the amazing building. A roving dinosaur will also be making appearances throughout the day.

There will also be a series of engaging science talks; including one about the popular computer game ‘Minecraft’, where the concepts presented in the game will be compared with real science and geology.

Chief Executive Officer Chris Pigram said the Open Day provides a great opportunity for Geoscience Australia to showcase the work of the national geoscience agency and to broaden the community’s understanding of the importance of geoscience in everyday life.

“Our scientists are excited about the chance to share how our work plays a critical role in helping Australia to respond to the major economic, social and environmental challenges that our nation faces, now and into the future,” Chris explained.

“It is through educational outreach activities like our Open Day that we generate community interest in our work, and hopefully inspire some of our younger visitors to become tomorrow’s geoscientists.”

When: Sunday 23 August, 10am – 3pm
Where: Geoscience Australia; corner Jerrabomberra Avenue and Hindmarsh Drive, Symonston ACT.
