THE Glass Workshop at the ANU School of Art is happy to be hosting many international glass artists in anticipation of the 2015 Ausglass conference in Adelaide, “States of Illumination, coming up from February 12-13.”

In conjunction with a program called “Honouring Cultures” being hosted by Canberra Glassworks, they’ll be presenting an evening symposium tomorrow, Tuesday, February 10, “Glass Collaborations,” which involves on a panel discussion on individual artistic practices and also the topic of collaboration.

Among the participating artists, Native American glass artist and International Artist in Residence at Canberra Glassworks, Preston Singletary, and Canberra glass artist Jenni Kemarre Martiniello will talk about their heritages and arts practices.

Singletary’s work is inspired by his Tlingit heritage from Alaska, and recreates in glass the many stories, animals and ceremonial objects from his traditional culture while Martiniello’s glass art forms are inspired by the beautiful woven objects of her Arrernte heritage, and the woven eel traps, dillibags and fish traps of our many traditional countries and their cultural practices.

The next day, Wednesday, February 11, Singletary, whose visit was initiated by the Indigenous Textiles and Glass Artists group, will introduce his work, including the collaborative body of work he has been creating with Dante Marioni over the past four years.

He will be introduced by Jason Frohnmayer, Cultural Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy, which is supporting his residency.
