Golden age of music and arts this weekend

THE Australian Chamber Orchestra will perform “Egarr & the Golden Age” at Llewellyn Hall this Saturday June 13 at 8pm.

Egarr, the dynamic director of the Academy of Ancient Music, is described as “intelligent, irreverent and bristling with energy” and he’s back conducting the music of Henry Purcell and William Lawes, not to say Bach and Haydn, on the ACO’s collection of 17th- and 18th-century instruments. THE Royal Academy of Dance is commemorating the 80th anniversary of the founding of the RAD in Australia with a gala performance at The Playhouse, Saturday, June 13, 6pm. CRAFT ACT: Craft and Design Centre will host ceramicist Janet DeBoos for an artist talk today, Thursday June 11 at 2pm in Craft ACT Gallery, Level 1, North Building, 180 London Circuit, in association with “Janet DeBoos: A Survey,” an exhibition which examines the artist’s career from the late 1970s to 2015. THE High Commission of Canada’s “Canada’s Arctic: Vibrant and Thriving” photographic exhibition at the High Court of Australia is open to the public from today, June 11, to July 2.


ALSO at Wesley this Sunday June 14 at 5pm,  The Oriana Chorale will sing “Songs of the Land and the People” —folksong, mixing the well-known such as ‘Simple Gifts’, or ‘Irish Tune from County Derry’, with other works including music by Sibelius (celebrating his 150th birthday), Percy Grainger, Holst and Copland. UNTIL July 5 in the foyer of Belconnen Arts Centre, four artists, Louise Curham, Michele Elliot, Sue Healey and Jo Law use installation, sculpture, choreography and moving image to construct new work. Each week of the project, one artist takes over the gallery, adding to what the artist before them has left behind. “Slowing down Time” is a project rather than an exhibition. IN “Traceries: Paintings and drawings,” artist Jenny Gibson Continues her preoccupation with the Australian bush, by exploring its complex ‘calligraphy’. At Belconnen Arts Centre, until July 5.

CMAG director Shane Breynard, will launch the group exhibition “Studio 15” at 4pm this Saturday June 13 at Strathnairn Arts, 90 Stockdill Drive Holt. The show of works by GW Bot, Jo Hollier, Peter Latona and Trenna Langdon continues until July 5.

SILVER TRYA, a curated exhibition featuring 5 past Tuggeranong Rotary Youth Award winners, showcases current work by Hayley Lander (winner in 2010 and 2011), Tiffany Cole (winner in 2008), Lauren Hewitt (winner in 2002), Paul Mosig (winner in 2005) and Sebastian Perri (winner in 1998). Visual Arts Program Manager, Narelle Phillips, says individually the works are “profoundly mysterious and thought provoking.” The exhibition at Tuggeranong Arts Centre continues until Saturday June 27.


QUEANBEYAN Art Society and Molonglo Catchment Group’s environmental show, “Along the Molonglo” is open to the public daily from 10.30am to 2pm at Queanbeyan Art Society, 6 Trinculo Place Queanbeyan (on the bank of the Queanbeyan River) and continues until Sunday June 28.
