Great lengths to vandalise play equipment in Greenway

THE ACT Government is asking residents to report vandalism of public facilities after a playground was significantly damaged in Greenway earlier this week forcing part of the site to be temporarily closed.

“The steel cables which anchor the large climbing net at a playground on Delittle Street, Greenway were cut, possibly with an angle grinder,” Manager, Place Management, Jane Carder said.

“As a result of the damage, the piece of equipment has been fenced off and will remain so until it can be repaired.

“It is very disappointing some members of the community engage in activity that damages our public playgrounds. Repairs to equipment are costly and the community will be without a popular play item for some time.

“This is especially relevant now we are close to the holiday period, when families want to be outdoors and enjoy playgrounds like this. The community can deter this kind of behaviour by reporting any incidents to authorities. Reporting this behaviour makes a difference.

“Vandalism is a burden on the ACT Government budget and means resources need to be directed away from other important services.”

People who witness or are aware of vandalism should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, where information can be provided anonymously, or Access Canberra on 13 22 81.
