Icon Water warning against scammers

CANBERRA’S water utility Icon Water is reminding members of the Canberra community to beware of people visiting their property claiming to be utility workers and asking for money or access.

“If visitors cannot produce identification, or you’re not convinced of their true identity – don’t let them enter your property and report the matter to the police,” A spokesperson said.

“Under the Utilities Act, Icon Water staff and contractors seeking to perform work on your property must always carry a photo identification card, which they must produce if they are asked. If someone claiming to be an Icon Water employee or contractor cannot produce this card, they may not be who they say they are and you should not let them enter your property.

“Importantly, Icon Water staff will never ask for payment when they are at your property.

“Customers can help keep their homes and their neighbourhoods safe by remembering the following:

  • Watch for strangers calling at neighbours’ doors, particularly the elderly and vulnerable;
  • Keep your screen door locked and make sure any door chains are in place;
  • Always ask for identification – genuine employees will always produce their ID card;
  • Make sure you look over the ID card carefully checking the photo and quality;
  • Remember that Icon Water staff wear clothing branded with their logo and drive branded vehicles;
  • If you are still in doubt then talk to us by calling the single contact number – 6248 3111 (Option 3).

“If a person is claiming to be an Icon Water employee and cannot produce an identity card, or if they are behaving suspiciously, then residents are urged to call ACT Policing on 13 14 44 or Icon Water on 6248 3111 (Option 3).”
