Legal graffiti sites being added and taken away

GRAFFITI artists in the ACT are now being directed to safer, more suitable legal graffiti sites in the region following a review of existing sites by the ACT Government.

“The recently completed review of legal graffiti art sites considered a range of factors, including safety for artists and the public, environmental protection and line of sight from roads and private residences,” Place Management Manager, Jane Carder, said.

“The review resulted in several sites being removed from the program and a number of new sites allocated that will be safer for the artists using them, while minimising impact on local residents.

Asset owners and residents were consulted on the suitability of the new sites and all sites were thoroughly reviewed by Territory and Municipal Services to ensure they are appropriate.

“Legal graffiti sites provide an opportunity for artists to improve their skills without engaging in antisocial or criminal activity by illegally placing graffiti on public and private assets. Legal sites are kept clean and are routinely painted over to provide a blank canvas for new art.

“The sites aim to change the attitudes and behaviours of illegal graffitists by encouraging self-improvement. Offensive graffiti including racist, violent or sexist work is prohibited.

“Following these changes, the ACT Government now manages 24 legal graffiti art sites across Canberra. The new sites are mainly located under bridges and underpasses. All sites are clearly signposted.”

The new locations are:

  • Lake Ginninderra under bridge at Ginninderra Drive, Belconnen;
  • Yerrabi Ponds spillway, Mirrabei Drive, Gungahlin;
  • Handbury Way underpass, Forde;
  • Richardson Ashley Drive/Tuggeranong Creek underpass, Isabella Plains;
  • Launceston Street bridge underpass, Woden and;
  • Cotter Road/Weston Creek cycle underpass, Holder/Coombs.

The sites being removed are:

  • Baldwin Drive/William Slim Drive underpass, Giralang;
  • Greenway skatepark;
  • The underpass 100 metres north of Ginninderra Drive, Melba;
  • Clift Crescent underpass, Richardson;
  • Two underpasses on Marr Street, near Marist College and Melrose High, Torrens;
  • Barry Drive/Sullivans Crescent catchment, Turner and;
  • Callam Street stormwater drain, Woden.
