ANDREW Wall will present a Bill in the Legislative Assembly designed to ensure newsagents, dedicated kiosks and other small businesses in the ACT retain the ability to sell and promote lottery products.

“The Bill I am bringing forward today came about as it became apparent that there were no restrictions on who could sell lottery products in the ACT. The legislation prevents the lottery provider from introducing the sale of lottery products in petrol stations or full line supermarkets in the ACT,” Andrew said.

“I am confident that this legislation strikes the right balance; meeting community expectation of how widely accessible gaming products should be, while also maintaining market opportunities for the lottery provider.

“The small businesses that currently sell lottery products have done so for a long time. They are a trusted part of our community and the existing retail network is highly trained and equipped to be the point of sale for this kind of product.

“The primary intention of this legislation is to ensure newsagents and other small businesses remain the primary point of sale for lottery products.

“This is a responsible course of action which safeguards Canberra’s small businesses and I encourage ACT Labor and the ACT Greens to support this legislation,” Mr Wall concluded.
