Music and Film at Tuggers

IT’S all go at Tuggeranong Arts Centre in the lead up to its November 7 Silvery Moon Festival.

First up is its latest in the twilight classic music series from 5 – 7pm this Sunday, October 18 and we hear there are still tickets available.

“Fire and Ice: Musical Gems from Italy & Russia” on is a blend of Latin drama and Russian pathos offering the rare opportunity to hear a group of Canberra’s —indeed Australia’s—top musicians, Barbara Jane Gilby on violin, Anne Horton on violin, Michelle Higgs on viola, David Pereira on cello, Chloe Lankshear, soprano vocals and Wendy Lorenz on piano. Borodin’s String Quartet No 2 will feature, with a selection of Puccini arias, as well as the exotic ‘Trio’ by Nino Rota, the “Godfather” composer, with other film scores. Also booking out fast we hear, are the films (all but one are free) being screened by the centre to match the Indiana, Nepalese, Brazilian, Filipino and Middle Eastern dance classes running later this month. The theatre is tiny, so you’d better get in soon.

7.30pm to 9pm Wed Oct 28 – Nepalese Film ‘Basain’ (‘Migration’) deals with a tragic story of how a heavily indebted villager is forced to leave his village. This was a Nepalese submission to the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Film in 2005. The $15 booking fee will go to the Australian Nepalese Friendship Society’s fundraising efforts for recovery after the Earthquake in Nepal. trybooking.com

  • 7.30pm to 9pm Thu Oct 29 – Filipino Film ‘Harana’. Described as “like the Filipino Buena Vista Social Club,” it tells of Florante, a classically trained guitarist who returns to the Philippines after 12 years of absence. Free entry. trybooking.com
  • 7.30pm to 9pm Fri Oct 30, Brazilian Film ‘Lives Of Rhyme’. From the makers of ‘The Motorcycle Diaries’ and ‘City of God’, this documentary follows three aspiring rappers living in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. For audiences over 18 years. Free entry. trybooking.com
  • 7.30pm to 9pm Tue Nov 3 – Middle Eastern Film ‘Dancing In Jaffa’. Pierre Dulaine, four-time ballroom dancing world champion, is fulfilling a life-long dream when he takes his program, Dancing Classrooms, back to his city of birth, Jaffa. Free entry. trybooking.com
  • 8-10.30pm Wed Nov 4 – Queer Film, “Ma Vie en Rose” (My Life in Pink) recreates the fantasies and dreams of childhood while simultaneously exploring the volatile subject of sexual identity. It won best foreign language film at the 1998 Golden Globe Awards. Free entry. trybooking.com
