New flags to try and get the shareway message across on Bunda Street

TO COINCIDE with National Ride2Work Day Shane Rattenbury has announced the installation of flags along Bunda Street to further differentiate it as a shared zone.

“The Bunda Street shared zone, with its artwork, feature lighting, raised crossings and new street furniture, has added to the colour and vitality of the city centre. These new flags – which highlight that pedestrians have right of way – will bring even more colour to the street,” Shane said.

“We’ve been happy with the way in which the Canberra community has adapted to the new shared zone. However we have had some feedback that people are unsure who has right of way.

“While commonplace in Europe, the shareway is a new concept in Canberra. These flags clearly indicate that pedestrians have right of way. They’ll help create a further sense that the street is different to others and help all road users travel through the area safely.

“The shareway already has several design features which encourage motorists to observe the 20km/h speed limit, such as raised entry thresholds and use of landscaping treatments to narrow the road.”

“Motorists and cyclists must give way to pedestrians in the shared zone. For cars, this means slowing down or coming to a stop to avoid a collision. Cyclists and pedestrians are able to cross the road at any point.

“The shared zone is just one way the ACT Government is creating an environment which makes healthy lifestyle choices easier and encourages greater use of sustainable and active transport.

“The Bunda Street shareway project was a finalist in the 2015 Planning Institute of Australia National Awards for Planning Excellence.”
