IT has emerged today that one Harley Stott, currently awaiting trial over the Gowrie shooting, has been rather more active on
Facebook
than one might have imagined a prisoner on remand to be.

In response Minister for Justice Shane Rattenbury has explained the measures underway to stop this in future.

“While a range of steps are taken to prevent contraband entry, as with all Correctional facilities in all jurisdictions, contraband continues to be a challenge. As Minister, I know the staff at the prison work very hard to intercept and prevent contraband to maintain the security of the facility and keep all detainees safe. While we’re not always successful, we continue to adapt our strategies to prevent contraband from entering the AMC,” Shane said.

“ACT Corrective Services endeavours to prevent contraband entry and works closely with ACT Policing in support of drug and contraband interdiction measures, this includes various security measures such as ACTCS intelligence staff, officers and the K-9 Unit working together to deter and intercept contraband before its entry into the AMC. This involves lawfully monitoring of the prisoner phone system and other communications, including social media.

“ACTCS conducts searches of detainee cells and common areas on a regular basis; there is an ongoing effort to prevent contraband entering the AMC and locate it in the event that it does.

“ACTCS is also regularly monitoring technological and procedural developments to ascertain what other steps may be taken to prevent entry and/or use of contraband phones in prisons. ACTCS is awaiting the findings from a Mobile Phone Jamming trial in Lithgow Correctional Centre and will consider any possible implications for the AMC once the trial has been fully evaluated.”
