ACT Fire & Rescue has maintained a presence at the Canberra Concrete Recyclers site overnight.

Crews were rotated through the job every three hours to continue pulling material off the rubbish pile and wetting it down.

Firefighters are expected to remain on scene for at least another 24 hours to get closer to the centre of the fire and fully extinguish it.

Smoke will continue to be visible. The Health Directorate advises that people with asthma, other chronic respiratory and/or chronic cardiac diseases should not perform vigorous exercise and should stay inside if affected by the smoke. People with asthma in particular should continue their medication and consult their general practitioner if they have any difficulties.

The area burning has reduced in size and the ACT Fire Brigade and workers from Canberra Concrete Recyclers are still undertaking their operation to ensure the fire doesn’t jump containment lines.

The fire will not be able to be put out and will have to burn out so crews will remain there today, tonight and likely for the next few days to isolate the burning waste and remove it.

Smoke will continue to come from the site and anyone with health concerns should contact ACT Health on 6205 1700.

Fire crews are making progress extinguishing the fire at the Canberra Concrete Recyclers.

It is a slow process with crews pulling apart the pile of waste to get to the source of the fire.

Crews will remain at the site on Pialligo avenue overnight.

There is still smoke in the air and anyone with health concerns should contact their GP or a health practitioner.
