PMs XI coming early with NZ arriving on October 23

CRICKET Australia has confirmed the annual Prime Ministers XI match will take place on Friday 23 October at Manuka Oval against the New Zealand BLACK CAPS.

The match will be New Zealand’s first official match on Australian shores before the first Commonwealth Bank Test match in Brisbane beginning 5 November.

“I’m delighted that the Prime Minister’s XI will open the upcoming summer of international cricket,” said Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

“I look forward to welcoming the New Zealand team to Canberra to add another chapter to the strong friendship between our two countries.”

Cricket Australia Chief Executive Officer, James Sutherland said the Prime Minister’s XI fixture has always been an important annual event on the Australian cricket calendar.

“We’re pleased this year that it will open our international season,” James said.

“New Zealand is one of the most competitive teams on the international stage and that augers well for a great contest at what we hope will be another full house at Manuka Oval.

“Canberra has certainly proved it’s cricket hosting credentials following the highly successful ICC Cricket World Cup. It is for that reason that this coming season Manuka will stage the PM’s XI and a highly anticipated one-day international between Australia and India as part of a new partnership between Cricket Australia, the ACT Government and Cricket ACT.”

The Prime Ministers XI team will be selected by Cricket Australia’s National Selection Panel (NSP) with input from the Prime Minister, and will be announced closer to the match.

“One of the core pillars of our strategy is to ‘put fans first’,” said Cricket ACT Chairman Ian McNamee.

“Being able to play the game on a Friday in October will allow more cricket lovers to get to the game and we are anticipating strong attendance at the match.

“The Prime Ministers XI match is an iconic event and we are delighted it is being used to launch the Australian international cricket summer. We encourage all families and cricket supporters to get their tickets and support this wonderful match.”

The match will also be CIC Australia’s 13th year as the major sponsor.

General tickets for the match will go on sale to the public on 21 August through Ticketek.
