Queanbeyan Council talking to the neighbours about the future

QUEANBEYAN Mayor, Tim Overall, and Council’s General Manager, Peter Tegart will meet with neighbouring councils to discuss options relating to the NSW Government’s Fit for the Future program.

Council last night authorised the Mayor and General Manager to commence meetings and enquiries with neighbouring councils to identify boundary adjustments and local government reform options that are in the best interest of the community.

“A report on these discussions will be presented to the 11 November Planning and Development Review Committee Meeting prior to Council making its submission to the NSW Government on 18 November,” Tim said.

The decision follows last week’s release of the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal’s report into NSW councils. The report, which rated councils either fit or not fit for the future, found that Queanbeyan City Council was fit in relation to the financial sustainability criteria, however it was deemed unfit in relation to the scale and capacity criteria. The report also found that all of Queanbeyan’s neighbouring councils were unfit.

“It has been made clear to councils that have been found not fit, under either the financial or scale and capacity criteria, that continuing to operate as they currently do is not an option,” Tim said.

“As agreed by Council, myself and the General Manager will be discussing boundary adjustments and local government reform options with a number of neighbouring councils and will be reporting back to Council in early November, ahead of our submission deadline on 18 November.”
