QUEANBEYAN City Council has agreed to move to tender on the Queen Elizabeth riverfront upgrades, which form an important part of the overall CBD improvements – stage 2 project.

The project will see a significant upgrade to Queen Elizabeth Park and the activation of the river foreshore in the area. The upgraded park will include a large community green space, hard stand area for markets and community events, a children’s playground, a wet play area and a walking/cycling track along the river edge.

The council has also undertaken significant work relating to this project in Monaro St which has including new trees, plantings and painting of the central median strip, new bollards, installation of banner poles in Monaro St, refreshed street furniture and the recent installation of up-tree lighting in the central median. In addition eight buildings have undergone facade transformations as part of Council’s main street buildings improvement program.

“This is a very pleasing decision of Council to move ahead with this very important, and popular, project,” Mayor Tim Overall said.

“This project has had significant support from the community and will deliver an area in our CBD that residents and visitors can enjoy and will allow us to focus on the beauty of the Queanbeyan River.”

Council staff will now finalise the tender documents and aim to advertise for tenders in the coming weeks.

The council also agreed to update and review its CBD Master Plan to incorporate ideas from the Downtown Q design competition.
