PHOTOACCESS has just announced artist Laura Hindmarsh as the recipient of the inaugural ‘Double Exposure’ residency program.
Her residency, which will commence in March 2016, is produced in partnership with Ainslie and Gorman Arts Centres, and funded by the ACT Government’s 2016 Arts Residencies ACT Program. It offers a mid-career artist living outside the ACT the opportunity to make and exhibit new work in Canberra in 2016, with the idea of supporting experimental photomedia practice.
Hindmarsh was selected following a national callout, by a specialist panel made up of Denise Ferris, Anne O’Hehir, and Janice Falsone.
The artist lives and works between London, UK, and Hobart, Tasmania. Working across the disciplines of drawing, video, performance and 16mm film, she has seen her work exhibited at Standard Practice New York, Apiary Studios London, Centre for Contemporary Photography Melbourne, Ve.Sch Vienna, TMAG Hobart, DARK MOFO Hobart, QVMAG Launceston and PICA Perth. As well, Hindmarsh has undertaken residencies through Contemporary Art Tasmania, Big Fag Press (Sydney), Bm:ukk in Residencie (Vienna), Cite Internationale des Arts (Paris) and Asialink (Japan).
Hindmarsh says her purpose is to ‘seek to investigate an impossibility of the photographic medium, inverting visuality and resisting the fixity of photography.’
She will spend seven weeks at ‘ArtSit’ in Ainslie and Gorman Arts Centre and participate in a public event or workshop at Gorman Arts Centre, a talk or technical demonstration at PhotoAccess, and a solo exhibition at PhotoAccess in November 2016.
