THE National Archives will celebrate Canberra’s Family and Community Day on Monday, 28 September 228, with a full day of activities to help locals and visitors learn more about their family and community.
There’ll be origami boat making, old-fashioned games, exploring the Constitution discovery trail and a chance to snap selfies with the famous Marie Celeste – not the ship but the real-life girl Marie-Celeste de Villentroy who was photographed by her father Albert Bellier de Villentroy wrapped in the Australian flag in 1921.
Visitors can enjoy an escorted tour of the Archives’ latest exhibition, “Life Interrupted: Gallipoli moments,” and staff will be on hand to answer questions on anything and everything about searching the Archives’ rich and diverse collection – including how to find your own family in the records.
Free hands-on workshops will reveal the secrets of finding your ancestors on the Archives’ Discovering Anzacs website – and show how to add an online tribute to them.
The day also offers an opportunity to explore the Archives’ beautiful 1920s building, designed by John Smith Murdoch, the architect of Old Parliament House, the Kingston Powerhouse, the Hyatt and the Ainslie Arts Centre, among others.
Not least, there’s the chance to view the Australian Constitution, usually kept under wraps to ensure its preservation for future generation.
Community Day at The National Archives of Australia, Queen Victoria Terrace, Parkes (just behind Old Parliament House, alongside Kings Avenue), 10am to 4pm on Monday, September 28.
