Shellshock corner on the move

services club

ANDREW Barr has announced a real estate shuffle in Manuka with the burned out Canberra Services Club (aka The Shellshock Inn) finding a new location (they’ll need to move their tank), a new child care facility, and an upgrade to Telopea Park School’s sporting facilities.

“Members of the Services Club have been without a home since their 65 year-old premises were completely destroyed by fire shortly after Anzac Day 2011,” Andrew said.

“This is a significant agreement that will benefit Manuka residents. The return of the Services Club, a new mixed-use development in Manuka, an expanded child care facility and a significant investment in the local school will see urban renewal across a wide area of the inner south.

“As part of the plan, the Manuka Occasional Child Care Centre will be relocated to a purpose-built, 100-space facility in Forrest, with the new Services club built on the current child care site in Manuka.

“The new child care centre will replace four tennis courts on New South Wales Crescent used by Telopea Park School. The plan provides $800,000 for the construction of new sporting facilities at the school.

“In addition to the new club premises, there will be a significant residential component to the development which will see Defence Housing Australia provide housing for defence force personnel living in Canberra.

“With the Services Club agreeing to surrender their lease on the former site adjacent to Manuka Oval, we are now in a position to proceed with the development of the master plan for this area, leading to further improvements for both players and spectators who love playing and watching games at this venue.”
