THE Canberra Centre this morning revealed a commissioned installation by artist-designer Benjamin Shine, on public display throughout the coming months.
The piece, titled ‘The Dance’, explores the idea of creativity as a powerful yet brief force charged with passion and energy — The Dance.
A white circular vessel releases a plume of high into the air, engulfing the ceiling above. The colours converge to form two large faces and a series of dancing figures, silhouetted within the flowing fabric.
The piece impressively utilises over 2000 metres of tulle constructed by folding and hand-sewing the fabric into place.
“The collaboration with Benjamin Shine marks an exciting trajectory for the Centre,” said Amanda Paradiso, Centre Manager at Canberra Centre.
Shine said there was a growing desire, especially by leading fashion brands, to introduce art and culture to their customers. For over a decade he has been exploring the idea of bringing tulle to life through his processes of ‘painting with fabric’.
The installation may be seen on Level 1 of the Canberra Centre.
