‘So You Think You Can Drag’ for one night only in Canberra!

LOCAL audiences are in for something unique next month, when the smash hit of the Melbourne queer performance scene comes to Canberra for one night only!

So You Think You Can Drag is an amateur drag competition, and a celebration of all things non-gender conformist. Designed to give competitors an opportunity to have a go at drag for the very first time, or provide a stage for the aspiring queens or kings, this show has been a massive success in Melbourne for the past two years, and is now hitting the road and going national!

The show’s creator is Canberra’s own Elena Kirschbaum. Originally the show was created as a one off as part of Corinbank Festival in 2012, but then went to Melbourne and ran as a single event as part of a festival in Melbourne. The show was a run away success, and when it ran in Melbourne again in May this year the show was completely sold out, with a bidding war on tickets.

“I couldn’t believe how much success it’s had,” says Elena.

“I think the appeal is that it’s a way to celebrate a genre that has largely been exclusively part of the queer community, but has hit mainstream popularity in the last couple of years.

“This event has seen competitors and audiences that identify as queer, straight, LGBTI, allies, anywhere on the sexuality spectrum getting to come and enjoy an event together.

The event is being supported by Ainslie and Gorman Arts Centres, and will be performing in the recently renovated Ralph Wilson Theatre at the Gorman Arts Centre.

So You Think You Can Drag will be in Canberra for one night only, on August 15 at 8pm.

Tickets available via trybooking.com/IIBO, Ralph Wilson Theatre, Gorman Arts Centre, 55 Ainslie Ave Braddon, 15 August 8pm – 10pm, More Information: facebook.com/sytycdrag
