More synthetic cannabis seized

Synthetic cannabis

ACT Policing has seized a quantity of suspected synthetic cannabinomimetics during a search warrant executed on a retail outlet in Belconnen today (Friday, 16 January).

About 1.30pm, Drugs and Organised Crime team detectives executed a Crimes Act search warrant at a tobacconist store in Belconnen after receiving information from the public.

During the search of the retail outlet police seized 69 bags of suspected synthetic cannabinomimetics.

A number of persons are assisting police with their inquiries. Investigations are ongoing.

Last year police seized 520 various brands and sized packets of synthetic cannabinoids during simultaneous search warrants executed on three retail outlets throughout Canberra. The value of the synthetic cannabinoids was estimated to be $25 000.

ACT Policing is reminding business owners that they have a responsibility to be aware of the content of products they are selling. The sale of synthetic drugs in the ACT is illegal.

If business owners are unsure of the content of their products then they need to consider removing them from their store completely or seek advice from the Therapeutic Goods Administration.

Penalties of up to five years in prison and/or fines of up to $55 000 for persons and $275 000 for businesses may apply if the substances are proven to be illegal.

If you are concerned a business may be selling synthetic drugs you can contact Crime Stoppers anonymously online at www.crimestoppers.com.au or alternatively call 1800 333 000.
