Tara’s foundation makes its first step

THE era of pulling down the blinds and turning up the television to block out the noise next door is over, according to Opposition Leader Bill Shorten.

Both sides of politics united at the launch of the Tara Costigan Foundation on Sunday to declare domestic violence a national priority, and pledge their support for the organisation’s work.

In a video address, Prime Minister Tony Abbott said the foundation offered hope in the face of tragedy, and was a powerful tribute to the life of a wonderful woman.

“Tara Costigan’s death is a reminder our country must change, our community must change and we all must change,” he said.

“We must all work together to say no more to domestic violence.”

Tara Costigan Foundation head executive Michael Costigan said while the outpouring of support from political leaders, media and the community was heart-warming, the work was far from over.

“Tara was number 15. Now we are up to 53. At this rate, more than 100 lives will be lost to domestic violence by the end of the year. That is a disgrace – and one for which we are all responsible,” he said.

“We are going to change this nation. Together we are strong.”

Mr Costigan named local domestic violence survivor and social work student Erin Regan as the foundation’s first “Tara’s Angel.”

The experienced case manager will work closely with individuals and families, connecting and co-ordinating vital services to help them secure appropriate housing, financial stability, regain their confidence, courage, self-belief and independence. Tara’s Angels will support victims to begin again, create safe homes and build new lives.
