The mowing program has been enhanced!

SHANE Rattenbury has announced the start of the enhanced 2015-16 Canberra-wide mowing program.

“This season’s mowing program has commenced earlier than previous years to allow for an extra mow of the city,” Shane said.

“This follows the ACT Government’s $4.9 million funding boost over the next four years for mowing, announced as part of the 2015/16 ACT Budget.

“The significant change to the mowing program is the earlier commencement which will allow for an additional mow during spring to coincide with accelerated grass growth. Territory and Municipal Services (TAMS) has also upgraded a number of its mowers to ensure the mowing equipment is suited to the conditions and downtime through breakdowns is minimised. These measures aim to better manage the spring flush.

“Keeping the grass cut down to size is a big job. Our base fleet of 80 mowers, supported by additional contract mowers, looks after 4900 hectares of public space which is the equivalent of mowing approximately 4900 sporting fields.

“The funding boost announced in the 2015/16 Budget also allows a ‘surge mowing capacity’ so high visibility and high use areas like major parks and arterial roads get an extra mow when they need it.

“Canberrans rightly place much importance on the upkeep of their city so I am pleased we are able to undertake a significantly enhanced mowing program for our suburbs, parks and other public areas. Managing seasonal conditions remains a constant challenge but I feel significant enhancements have been made to improve the program.

Mr Rattenbury said the annual mowing season program runs until May and encouraged members of the public to visit tams.act.gov.au to see the upcoming schedule which is regularly updated.

Residents are reminded they are responsible for mowing the nature strip that adjoins their property.
