Variety scholarships open for nominations

VARIETY – the Children’s Charity in NSW — is inviting nominations of deserving young people for its scholarship program to enable them to realise their dreams in the arts, education or sport.

The scholarships are awarded annually to children in NSW and ACT who are disadvantaged or living with a disability and who display talent to cover costs such as tuition, equipment, competition fees and courses up to the value of $5,000. Different talents are recognised, from pianists to photographers, artists and cricketers.

Paralympic Swimmer of the Year, Maddi Elliot, born with right side cerebral palsy, is a shining example of the opportunities Variety has provided. An S8 classified swimmer, she is an Olympic and Commonwealth Games gold medallist and world-record holder. With the assistance of a Variety Scholarship, she was able to pay her squad and competition fees and travel to competitions to become, at age 13, the youngest Australian Paralympian to win a gold medal in London and recently, Swimming Australia’s 2015 Paralympic Swimmer of the Year.

Her mother Nikki Elliot, praises Variety’s program saying, “The ongoing financial support via the scholarship program has enabled Maddi to travel and compete interstate for swimming and has helped fund her coaching fees.”

Tam Johnston, the CEO of Variety, says, “If you know an exceptional child who could benefit from this support, now’s the time to apply.”

Variety Scholarships are awarded to children up to and including the age of 18 who live in NSW or the ACT and are Australian citizens or have permanent resident status. Applicants must demonstrate a talent and a genuine need for assistance.

Applications are now open until Friday October 30 at variety.org.au

Successful applicants will be announced in December and will be invited to attend an official presentation early in 2016.
