With the economy on the nose, public school enrollments surge

JOY Burch says the latest ACT schools census shows strong growth in public school enrolments.

ACT Minister for Education and Training Joy Burch today welcomed the February 2015 school census that measures enrolments at both public and non-government schools.

“I am pleased to once again see very strong enrolments in our public schools across the primary, high and college sectors,” Ms Burch said.

Key census results include:

  • As at 18 February 2015 there were 71,917 students enrolled at all ACT schools, an increase of 1,357 students (1.9%) from 2014.
  • Public schools accounted for 60.4% of all enrolments, with 43,427 students enrolled in ACT public schools.
  • Non-government schools accounted for 39.6% of all enrolments, with 28,490 students enrolled.
  • There were 2,082 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in all ACT schools in 2015. The number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in 2015 increased by 122 students (6.2%) compared with 2014. There were 1,663 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students (79.9%) in public schools in 2015.

“The ACT Government continues to invest in public education, delivering a high quality system. Investments in our teaching staff ensure that our students are being taught by the best teachers in the best learning environments,” Ms Burch said.
