Work to start on fixing the Barton Highway intersection

Mick Gentleman

MICK Gentleman says work on the $10 million Barton Highway/Gundaroo Drive/William Slim Drive intersection upgrade will begin soon with the construction contract awarded to Huon Contractors Pty Ltd.

Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack said the project was being funded by the Australian Government’s Roads to Recovery programme.

“This project will bring relief to motorists and build on Gungahlin’s integrated transport network to improve safety and reduce congestion,” Michael said.

“The upgrade will see additional lanes and traffic signal control on all four approaches.”

Mick said the signalisation of the intersection will be coordinated to balance traffic flows on all approaches, particularly during peak periods, and ultimately reduce driver delays.

“The upgrade will provide particular relief for drivers travelling along Gundaroo Drive and onto the Barton Highway from Crace and the rest of Gungahlin during the morning peak period,” Mick said.

“Works are also currently underway on the Gungahlin Drive augmentation, with the current shared path to be moved to allow for road widening, the realigned shared path for pedestrians and cyclists will be completed first.

“Whilst these projects will bring relief to motorists upon completion, the construction phases of both will present some inevitable traffic congestion, and I would like to thank motorists for their patience during its construction phase.

“Gungahlin residents will be kept up-to-date throughout construction with electronic road signage, website information, social media posts and letterbox drops.”

Works are expected to start in coming weeks and take approximately 12 months to complete.
