AT LAST, the ANU Drill Hall Gallery has re-opened. With a state-of-the-art climate control system, programmable LED lights and a purpose-built space for Sidney Nolan’s “Riverbend”, it kicks off with “The Streets of Papunya”, curated by Vivien Johnson. Extended opening hours are 10am-5pm, Wednesday to Sunday.

CONGRATULATIONS to local artist Sui Jackson, the first recipient of the new Glass and Science Residency that’s been developed in partnership between Canberra Glassworks and the Murray-Darling Basin Authority. The culmination of the project will be a public talk and demonstration of his work as part of this year’s Glass and Science event for National Science Week, at Canberra Glassworks on August 12.

CANBERRA Youth Theatre is joining with members of Canberra Dance Theatre’s over-65 years “Gold” troupe in “The Verbatim Project”, which uses audio interviews, video footage, live commentary and headphone verbatim technique to ask: “Are these two age groups really that distanced from each other?” At Ralph Wilson Theatre, Gorman Arts Centre, July 21-24. THE National Capital Orchestra will join the Canberra Choral Society to present Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana”. Also on the program is Wagner’s prelude to “Lohengrin” plus “River Symphony”, a work by contemporary Australian composer and conductor Sean O’Boyle. THE National Portrait Gallery and the St Vincent de Paul Society are asking the Canberra community to pick up their knitting needles and crochet hooks to create warm winter scarves to assist people in need. Scarves donated will go to support the 2016 Vinnies Winter Appeal at the NPG’s Winter Festival on August 7. Just bring your creations along.

“BIJOU”, that musical/narrative show by Chrissie Shaw and Alan Hicks about life in the Parisian demi-monde, is heading for the Big Smoke so they’re using crowdfunding to hire a Sydney publicist and also to engage an Auslan interpreter for a performance for people with hearing loss.
