THE inaugural “Ralph Indie” program is a new package of independently produced performance at Gorman Arts Centre, honouring the name of the late Canberra theatre giant Ralph Wilson. First up will be “Wiggle Room,” a contemporary dance and aerial acrobatics work by Alison Plevey and Solco Acro. Ralph Wilson Theatre, September 27-October 1. Bookings to agac.com.au

THE Q has Noni Hazlehurst in town soon with Daniel Keene’s play, “Mother”, directed by Matt Scholten. Christie (Hazlehurst) finds herself at the fringe of the world, homeless, ageing and living on the outskirts of suburbia. THE Queer Screen Film Festival comes to Canberra for the first time this year, showing “Southwest of Salem” about four Latina lesbian women who were wrongly convicted of a gang rape and “Other People”, which played on the opening night of Sundance this year. “GOBSMACKED and kicked in the stomach once again” is how director of the avant-garde music festival “SoundOut”, Richard Johnson, describes himself at the news they’ve missed out on funding from Events ACT. The ART Music awards-winning event has run for seven years, but now the future is questionable.

ROBYN Mellor’s group of musicians, Polifemy, will join The Gentleman’s Agreement, Walking the Dog and Trumpet Club to perform compositions inspired by birds. THE ANU School of Music’s “Rhythm & Blooms Festival” is a showcase of Canberra’s new and emerging musical talent, like the Hugo Lee Jazz Band, Betty Alto, Kaliede and Pocket Fox. At Floriade, September 27-October 7, noon to 1pm each weekday. Concerts are free.

THE Queanbeyan Art Society’s Spring Art Show for Charity will be opened in City Walk, Civic, at 12.30pm on Saturday, September 24, by Arts Minister Chris Bourke and Queanbeyan Palerang Regional Council Administrator Tim Overall, with entertainment by the Sing Australia Choir. It runs until October 3.

OLIVER Goldsmith’s theatre classic, “She Stoops to Conquer”, is directed by Tony Turner in his fourth directorial role with Canberra REP. At Theatre 3, 3 Repertory Lane, Acton, September 23-October 8. Bookings to canberrarep.org.au or 6257 1950.
