ANDREW Barr says a re-elected ACT Labor Government will establish a new urban renewal authority to take responsibility for projects like the City to the Lake and renewing the Northbourne corridor.
“The authority will make sure these projects develop effectively, listen to community views, and give Canberra well-planned, well-designed, world-class spaces and homes we can be proud of,” Andrew said.
“The creation of the authority reinforces the ACT Labor Government’s commitment to the delivery of City to the Lake, CBD and Northbourne Gateway renewal projects in a coordinated and financially responsible manner. These important, city-shaping, long-term projects need strong strategic planning, strong corporate governance, and leadership from individuals with a variety of skills.
“The new authority will be responsible for coordinating the development of City Gateway, CBD, City to the Lake, administering precinct Development Agreements and managing development in partnership with the private sector.
“The new authority will establish clear development objectives and act in the long-term public interest of the Territory. It will work closely with the community, using representative consultation to actively seek the opinions of Canberrans. ACT Labor will make sure Canberrans have a more direct say on the future of their city. We will increase requirements on the government to engage the community and take the full spectrum of the community’s views into account.
“The existing Land Development Agency will be responsible for making sure the ACT Government releases more greenfield land and meets our affordable housing targets. This focus will make delivering new suburbs more efficient, and give Canberrans the choice between free-standing homes in our garden suburbs and lower-maintenance townhouses or apartments in convenient, central locations close to work and entertainment.”
