Canberra High takes out the Construction and Engineering Bridge Challenge

Bridge Challenge

SHANE Rattenbury has congratulated students from Canberra High School as the overall winner of the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) Construction and Engineering Bridge Challenge.

“It was a pleasure to attend the CIT bridge building challenge today with the four finalist schools, to see their engineering projects tested,” Shane said.

“The goal for each school team was to design and construct a bridge that would showcase construction technique, efficiency, and strength, and that would outlast the bridges built by the other teams. Students could use any bridge design they wished, using the specific materials supplied such as wood, nails and glue.

“Seeing the different ways that students designed and constructed their bridges was quite impressive. The vigorous testing process gave students a real insight to what engineers and professionals in the construction industry need to consider everyday.

“The challenge highlights to Year 9 and 10 students, and those enrolled in a building construction certificate, the many pathways that CIT has to offer for students to pursue careers in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

“Congratulations to the four schools who made it to the finals: Canberra High School; Kingsford Smith School; Namadgi School and Caroline Chisholm School; and a special mention to students from Canberra High School for winning the overall award,” said Mr Rattenbury.

In 2017, the competition plans to add another level for college students to build a suspension bridge, and possibly include a renewable energy component.
