Eight new public housing homes in O’Connor

Key Handover

YVETTE Berry has celebrated the latest milestone of the ACT Government’s $550 million Public Housing Renewal Program with the completion of eight new homes in O’Connor.

“The new homes represent the future for the ACT’s public housing tenants – better, more efficient and more accessible homes that meet their needs, now and in the future,” Yvette said.

“These new homes are centrally located and have been designed to be more energy efficient, as well as reduce maintenance costs.

“We know that access to good housing is vital to so many parts of life – work, good health, education, socialising and inclusion more broadly.”

The Public Housing Renewal Program has made significant progress through the end of the 2015-16 financial year:

  • construction is complete or underway for more than 350 dwellings spanning Monash, Chisholm, Coombs, Moncrieff and Nicholls
  • a further 157 purchases under our Expression of Interest program are either under contract or ready to progress
  • 38 have been purchased through Housing ACT.

“In total this puts the program well on the way towards the total 1,288 properties to be renewed,” Yvette said.

“The government will invest around $391 million through the program in the next four years – supporting local construction while we deliver these great new homes for tenants.

“In total the program is expected to create more than 2,500 jobs and it will benefit thousands of tenants into the future.

“It has been really encouraging to see the quality of these new builds coming through this program and I would like to thank all who have contributed to this project.”
