ElectionsACT give green light for Facebook election free for all

rainbow over the assembly

“CITYNEWS” was a little surprised to see an attack ad on Facebook today with no authorisation on it. Note this was a paid advertisement, not just posted content.

Here’s the post:

We asked ElectionsACT if this was OK and this was what their spokesperson had to say.

“The authorisation statement is under the “About” heading on the CanTheTram’s facebook homepage. Provided an authorisation statement appears on a Facebook homepage Elections ACT has taken the view that the authorisation requirements are met. Individual posts do not require separate authorisation.”

Can The Tram’s “About” page has this information:

PAGE INFO
Short description
CanTheTram Inc is an incorporated community association. Authorised by J L Smith, PO Box 579, Erindale Centre ACT 2903

Long description

CanTheTram is a community association opposed to Civic to Gungahlin light rail because we do not believe it’s the right public transport solution for Canberra. It’s simply too expensive, benefits too few people, and is not suited to Canberra’s spread-out urban geography.

We do not have any political affiliations. We formed in 2015 with the following aims:

– To represent ACT residents and taxpayers who oppose the Civic to Gungahlin light rail project, as currently envisaged and being pursued by the ACT Government.
– To counter misleading promotion of the project by the Government.
– To make Canberra taxpayers fully aware of the true costs of the project over the life of the contract
– To have the planned investment in Gungahlin light rail put to more worthy infrastructure,
including a more appropriate and better public transport network.
– To develop ideas for a public transport network that is preferable to the Gungahlin light rail
project and light rail master plan.

The CanTheTram vision is for an integrated, efficient, comfortable, timely and rapid public transport network which services the whole of Canberra.

We believe Stage 1 (Gungahlin-Civic) light rail contract should be cancelled as soon as possible and an independent, multi-disciplinary study group with appropriate expertise in transport planning, technology and urban planning should be established to make recommendations on the development of Canberra over the next 30 years.
