Ever faster declarations of smoke free areas

MEEGAN Fitzharris has introduced a bill intended to provide a more streamlined process for declaring smoke-free public places around Canberra.

“Under the Smoke-Free Public Places Amendment Bill 2016, the Chief Minister and the responsible minister will jointly have the power to declare smoke-free areas to help reduce community exposure to harmful second?hand smoke,” Meegan said.

“Priority will be given to exploring smoke-free options at places used by children and their families, including playgrounds, sporting fields and bus waiting areas.

“A recent community consultation showed around 90 per cent of respondents would support such smoke-free areas, so Canberrans are overwhelmingly supportive of smoke-free options in certain public spaces.

“Any proposed smoke-free area would be informed by community consultation. Costs and benefits, including economic and business impacts, will be thoroughly considered by government to ensure a balanced approach.

“These changes are critical to prevent children and young people taking up smoking, and also offer support to smokers who are trying to quit by reducing social cues to smoke.

“This legislation allows for more flexibility and simply brings us in line with other jurisdictions when it comes to implementing smoke-free public places and events.

“Community education will be undertaken to ensure people know where smoking is and is not permitted. For example, ‘no smoking’ signs will be used.

“Through this initiative the ACT Government aims to protect the health of the community and ensure Canberrans can enjoy public amenities without exposure to second-hand smoke,” said Minister Fitzharris.
