Fire at the Pialligo Estate’s Hume Smokehouse

MULTIPLE fire crews are at the scene of a fire within an industrial estate at Hume.

ACT Fire & Rescue was alerted to the incident off Shepard Street at 6:38pm.

Firefighters arrived to find a cold storage facility fully engulfed in fire.

Four fire pumpers, support crews and commander are conducting defensive firefighting from outside the building.

There are no other buildings nearby under threat at this time.

A fifth fire pumper has now arrived at the scene on the corner of Sheppard Street and Raws Crescent.

Firefighters are continuing to work on suppressing the flames from outside the building.

It’s expected to take quite some time to fully extinguish the fire.

Fire crews are making slow progress as they work to bring the blaze under control.

Firefighters have not been able to access inside the building yet.

The first firefighters to arrive confirmed flames could be seen coming from the roof as they approached.

ACT Fire & Rescue were alerted to the fire by multiple Emergency Triple Zero (000) calls.

ACT Fire & Rescue has deployed their Bronto aerial firefighting appliance to the scene to allow crews to attack the flames with water from above.

Two of the original five fire pumpers responded to the incident are now being released from the job.

Smoke from the fire is localised in the immediate area.

The fire has been extinguished.

Firefighters are just putting out a few hot spots throughout the premises, which has been extensively damaged.

The building housed a food processing business, not a cold storage facility as first thought when firefighters arrived at the scene.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage but will be investigated.

Firefighters are continuing to monitor and put out a few hot spots throughout the premises, with the Bronto aerial appliance being used to put out hotspots in the roof.

Crews are now awaiting a structural engineer to arrive on scene and inspect the premises, before further investigation in to the cause of the fire can continue.

Following investigation, ACT Fire & Rescue have not been able to determine the cause of the fire due to the extent of damage caused, however the incident has been deemed not to be suspicious.

Firefighters have now handed the premises back to the building owners
