rain

THE Queanbeyan unit of the SES says the Bureau of Meteorology have issued a flood warning for the Queanbeyan and Molonglo Rivers. With up to 260 millimetres of rain received in the last 48 hours. The Queanbeyan River is expected to peak at 5.5m at around 10am this morning in the Queanbeyan CBD. They are expecting Oaks Estate crossing on the Molonglo to peak at 6m at 11am.

Incident Controller Melanie Schaefer says there is no immediate cause for concern for Queanbeyan residents. Local businesses have been advised of the rising floodwaters, Queanbeyan Riverside Caravan Park has been advised to prepare for evacuation. At this stage that will be the only possible evacuation. Rain has now eased with no further significant rainfall forecast at this point.

“Stay out of floodwater, you not only place your own life in danger, you place the lives of your rescuers in danger too.

“Queanbeyan has teams of specialist swift water rescue technicians on site as well as storm teams working through the last of the 36 requests for assistance that we have received.”
