ACT Policing assisted a man with a vehicle fire in Gordon on Saturday night (7 May).
About 7.25pm, police observed the vehicle on fire was parked on a gradual downhill slope facing the roundabout of Jim Pike Avenue and Knoke Ave.
Police were unable to extinguish the fire and observed a number of fuel ‘jerry’ cans in the back of the vehicle.
Police, with the assistance of local residents closed nearby streets and created a 50 metre evacuation zone.
The fire escalated quickly with flames reaching more than 5m in height, engulfing the entire vehicle.
The extreme heat of the fire caused the hand break cable to malfunction and disengage. The uncontrolled vehicle rolled approximately 100m down the hill towards Knoke Ave, through a roundabout and collided with a single story apartment complex.
The fire from the vehicle reached inside one residential unit.
ACT Fire and Rescue arrived and quickly extinguished the fire which was contained to the main bedroom of the affected unit. The fire was deemed to be non-suspicious.
No one was injured during the incident.
