Greens promise bus fare freeze

SHANE Rattenbury and Murrumbidgee candidate Caroline Le Couteur have announced details of the Greens transport plan, including Stage 2 of light rail and a bus fare freeze.

“The Greens are putting the community first and making it easier and more affordable to get around our city,” Shane said.

??“Canberra needs a public transport system that takes pressure off our roads, makes it easier to get around, and helps our city grow around sustainable transport. That’s what extending light rail to Woden is about.

“Bringing light rail to Canberra’s south is a win for the Woden community, and beyond,” Caroline said.

“A light rail line to Woden will create a spine that connects the city’s north and south. It will revitalise Woden town centre – bringing more people, new businesses, and new quality development.

“The Greens are already looking to future light rail stages that will connect Tuggeranong, Belconnen, Weston Creek and Molonglo, making public transport convenient and affordable for all Canberrans,” said Ms Le Couteur.

Mr Rattenbury also announced a bus fare freeze to encourage more Canberrans to use public transport, and make sure buses stay affordable as light rail is being built.

“Public transport is good for Canberra. It’s often cheaper than driving and, especially as light rail is built, will become faster and more reliable than driving. Freezing public transport fares will make public transport more attractive and encourage more people to use it more often.

“By 2020, light rail will connect the city to Gungahlin and we will be well on the way to having our light rail route to Woden.

“The Greens will keep building our light rail network, investing in our buses, and we won’t stop until everyone in Canberra has fast, convenient transport that works for them,” Mr Rattenbury said.
