Greens promise the criminalise revenge porn

shane rattenbury

SHANE Rattenbury says the ACT Greens will introduce new revenge porn laws as the sharing intimate images without consent becomes a growing problem right across our community and country.

“Sharing images without their consent, otherwise known as ‘revenge porn,’ is deplorable,” Shane said.

“The fact that we’ve seen young men in Canberra do this to their peers is disturbing. These are their classmates, friends, girlfriends and sisters. As a community, we must condemn this behaviour – and take action to promote a culture of respecting women and girls amongst young men.

“That’s why I’m announcing that we will make it illegal to record or share an intimate image without consent – or to threaten to,” Shane said.

ACT Greens spokesperson for women Veronica Wensing said these laws were needed to tackle a toxic, sexist culture.

“Our young men need to do better, and we as a community need to make sure we are sending them the right messages about respecting girls and women. This is a cultural issue that needs to be addressed here in the ACT and across the country.

“We must tackle the toxic culture that has led those young men to believe that women have no right to privacy, dignity or choice. That’s what these laws are about,” Ms Wensing said.

The Greens will make it a criminal offence to:

  • knowingly or recklessly recording an intimate image without consent;
  • knowingly or recklessly sharing intimate images without consent; and
  • threatening to take and/or share intimate images without consent.
