Greens promise traffic management plans for schools

SHANE Rattenbury has announced a $20 million initiative to work with every school community in Canberra to develop their own school safety traffic management plan intended to make schools and surrounding neighborhoods safer.

“Putting the community first means really understanding your local community. Every school and every school community has its unique needs and challenges,” Shane said.

“We want Canberra to be a city that supports active transport and active living. The Greens want a city where parents can send their children off to school walking or cycling with the confidence that they can get to school safely and easily.

“As well as investing in more school buses to get kids safely to and from school; the ACT Greens have committed to work with each individual school to create traffic management plans. These plans will respond to the specific needs of each school environment and be developed with the school, P&C and school community.

“Over the last six months, I have visited many Canberra schools and it’s clear that every ACT school and surrounding area presents different challenges and risks to our students.

“The Canberra Liberals are out of touch with the real challenges that Canberra schools are facing. No gimmicky one-size-fits-all approach like flashing lights can respond to the individual needs of each of our schools.

“Instead, we are committed to developing a tailored plan for each Canberra school to keep students safe.

“That’s why today I am announcing that the ACT Greens will invest $20 million to create an “ACT school safety improvement fund” and create individual school travel and traffic management plans for every Canberra school.

“The ACT Greens are committed to working with each individual school to make the school grounds, and surrounding areas, as safe as possible.”
