Greyhound racers taking their fight to the election

THE Canberra Greyhound Racing Club (CGRC) has built an ACT Election Campaign Fighting Fund to run a large-scale PR campaign, including paid advertising to demand the next Assembly consult and negotiate with the racing industry.

“Following briefings and questionnaires with candidates from all political parties and independents, the CGRC will announce their final support for aspiring MLAs,” a spokesperson said.

“A CGRC spokesperson said the racing industry did not demand or expect unconditional support from politicians. However, like all Canberrans, greyhound racing participants were entitled to natural justice and to have their case for continuing heard by elected representatives.

“The Labor Government has chosen to not consult with the racing industry and have demonstrated a failure in understanding the sport. That is why the CGRC no longer has confidence in them.

“The CGRC will support candidates who demonstrate a commitment to good governance and appropriate consideration of our Plan. That includes Labor candidates prepared to show reason and argue against the Chief Minister’s bad kneejerk decision to shut the sport.

“We are also pleased to announce that at least one of the ACT’s greyhound owners will be contesting the ACT Election. Long-time CGRC member Alan Tutt is nominating in Ginninderra and will be one of the candidates who will receive our help.

“Three other parties have also indicated support for our position and we will be announcing them next week.

“The CGRC’s final decision on supporting candidates will result in all that can be legally and appropriately done under ACT legislation to help elect an Assembly committed to transparency and consultation.”
