MEEGAN Fitzharris has opened a new free exhibition promoting cultural understanding of one of China’s largest cities, Hangzhou, at the Civic Library.

“Hangzhou will host the G20 Leaders’ Summit in early September for the group of 20 of the largest economies,” Meegan said.

“Hangzhou Library asked 10 libraries around the world to help promote its city and Libraries ACT is delighted to be the Australian library to host the exhibition.

“The exhibition Ordinary Hangzhou contains a variety of items that include photos of life in the city, as well as books, maps and other items that signify Chinese culture. Libraries ACT is also displaying digital images of Hangzhou at some of its other branches across Canberra.

“Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang Province located near Shanghai, in south-east China. It is famous for its stunning scenery and various historical sites.

“One striking resemblance between Canberra and Hangzhou at the exhibition is the man-made West Lake, considered to be one of the most beautiful sights in China. The city is one of China’s popular tourist destinations year round.

“It is also pleasing to hear that the Hangzhou community have had a chance to deepen their understanding of Australia. Since 2002, the Australian Consulate in Shanghai has donated Australian magazines and books to the Hangzhou Library as part of the Australian Friendship Collection.

“I would like to thank the Hangzhou Library for donating the exhibition material to Libraries ACT and offer the invitation for Canberrans to become familiar with the city.”

Ordinary Hangzhou is on display at the Civic Library, Canberra City, until Wednesday 24 August 2016.
