simon corbell

SIMON Corbell says a new Discrimination, Health Services, and Disability and Community Services Commissioner, Karen Toohey, will begin working at the restructured ACT Human Rights Commission from July 4.

“Ms Toohey has an extensive background and experience in human rights, discrimination and complaints handling and I am confident she will be a strong advocate in protecting the rights and interests of some of the most vulnerable and discriminated against in our community,” Simon said.

“Ms Toohey has been Deputy Commissioner in the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner since 2013. She was also the Acting Commissioner Chief Executive Officer with the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission from 2010-13, as well as working for about 15 years with the Australian Human Rights Commission as Director, Complaints Handling and Principal/Senior Conciliation Officer.

“I would also like to thank Mr Graeme Innes for taking on the Commissioner role while a permanent appointment was finalised and for his work to assist with the establishment of the new role of Discrimination, Health Services and Disability and Community Services Commissioner,” Mr Corbell said.

Ms Toohey will join the new ACT Human Rights Commission’s leadership team, comprising the President and Human Rights Commissioner Dr Helen Watchirs OAM, as well as Victims of Crime Commissioner Mr John Hinchey, and Public Advocate and Children and Young People Commissioner Ms Jodie Griffiths-Cook.
