Liberals promise blinky lights

40 signs

ALISTAIR Coe and Jeremy Hanson are promising that if elected to government the Canberra Liberals will improve safety for children by installing flashing signs in ACT school zones.

“The flashing signs would be operational during hours of school speed zones to remind drivers to slow down. The flashing signs have been installed across much of NSW and have been demonstrated to be effective in reminding drivers and enhancing safety for children,” Alistair said.

“Whilst some motorists consciously speed, many only do so because of a momentary lack of concentration and these signs will prompt motorists to slow down on the most critical stretches of our roads,” Mr Coe concluded.

“We will allocate $7.5 million for this commitment to roll out flashing lights across Canberra schools,” Jeremy said.

“The Canberra Liberals are committed to ensuring students safety around schools. These flashing light signs have proven to be a practical measure to enhance safety in other jurisdictions and they will be welcomed by Canberra schools,” Shadow Minister for Education Steve Doszpot concluded.

UPDATE: The Parents and Citizens have leapt swiftly aboard this idea:

Responding to the Canberra Liberals’ recent policy announcement, the ACT Council of Parents and Citizens Associations (Council) welcomes flashing signs in school zones.

“‘The ACT Council of Parents and Citizens Associations has for some time lobbied for the installation of flashing signs in school zones in the ACT and is pleased to see the ACT Liberals promise to install flashing signs in school zones if elected in October,” said John Haydon, Council President.

Council believes that the safety of students and members of the school community is a priority. Strategies like flashing signs ensure that our schools are a safer environment for students to learn in.

School traffic and road safety is a key aspect of Council’s 2016 ACT election priorities. For more information visit: [www.actparents.org.au].
