Liberals promise help for the community sector

Nicole Lawder

JEREMY Hanson and Nicole Lawder say the Canberra Liberals are committing to enhancing Canberra’s community sector through a number of initiatives that will increase homelessness services, reduce red tape and keep the government out of the sector’s own pockets.

“The Canberra Liberals believe in Canberra’s community sector and the contribution it makes to many disadvantaged people across the ACT. As a former CEO in the sector I understand what it needs to thrive,” Nicole said.

“Today we’re committing to three separate initiatives including:

  • $800,000 for the Communities@Work Reach Home Program to continue its role offering affordable, safe and secure housing for families in need.
  • Removing the 0.34% Community Sector Reform Levy, thereby allowing community sector organisations to put more money where it’s needed.
  • Removing red tape that inhibits organisations who want to provide short-term emergency accommodation.

“The Communities@Work Reach Home Program provides critical accommodation to women and families escaping domestic violence situations and deserves further support while the Community Sector Reform Levy has been an inhibitor to the sector for some years.

“I’ve heard from many organisations that want to provide short term crisis accommodation, only to face restrictive red tape,” Ms Lawder concluded.

“The Canberra Liberals believe the community sector should be able to get on with what it does best and provide support to people in need, which is why we’re committing to this package today. We’ll continue to announce further initiatives ahead of the ACT Election,” Mr Hanson concluded.
