Liberals promise an ICAC for Canberra

jeremy hanson

JEREMY HANSON has announced that a Canberra Liberals Government will create an Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) to ensure ACT government integrity going forward.

“An ACT ICAC will strengthen the Canberra Liberals existing Integrity Package,” Jeremy said.

“After 15 years in power, there is increasing concern in the community about the ethical conduct of the ACT Labor/Greens Government.

“Recently there have been a number of issues of concern, particularly around property deals, referred for investigation to the Auditor-General, and the ‘Brumbies’ property issues which are currently being investigated by the AFP.

“In addition to an ICAC, our recently announced Integrity Package includes an Independent Public Service Commissioner and $3 million in additional funding for the Auditor-General.

“Restoring integrity in government is a key priority for the Canberra Liberals and our extended integrity package will act as a strong deterrent to corruption in our community and government,” Mr Hanson concluded.

UPDATE: The Greens have welcomed this development:

The ACT Greens have welcomed news that the Canberra Liberals have changed their position on an ACT Integrity Commission with investigative powers.

“Less than a month after refusing to include an ACT Integrity Commission in their ‘integrity package’, we’re delighted that the Canberra Liberals have changed their minds,” said ACT Greens MLA, Shane Rattenbury.

“After years of smears and innuendo against their political opponents, the Liberals have finally bowed to community pressure and agreed to an ACT Integrity Commission.

“The Greens’ proposal for an ACT Integrity Commission would allow for independent investigations into allegations of misconduct, similar to the powers of the NSW ICAC. It would also provide advice and support for agencies to improve their standards.

“Other parts of the country – like NSW – waited until it was too late to take this kind of action. We have an opportunity to learn from their mistakes and shine a light into the dark corners.

“Putting the community first means holding ourselves to the highest standards – and so far, the Greens have set agenda and set the standard.

“We ?now ?call on the Labor Party to back an ACT Integrity Commission and for both parties to follow the Greens’ lead and commit to cleaning up political donations, including from developers,” said Mr Rattenbury.
