Mattress fire in Fyshwick

ACT Fire & Rescue is working to extinguish a fire in Fyshwick.

Firefighters were alerted to the incident in Lithgow Street at 2.10pm and responded with two fire pumpers and a CAFS tanker.

The first fire crew to arrived a short time later to find a pile of mattresses well alight.

There is a large amount of smoke in the area and members of the public are advised to stay indoors in affected areas if possible.

Firefighters are still working to extinguish the blaze which is inside a building in Lithgow Street.

The fire is located amongst a large pile of mostly scrap metal.

The pile is approximately four meters high and 100 meters square in diameter.

The mattresses, where the fire is believed to have started were in the middle of that pile.

WorkSafe ACT and the EPA are also on scene.

ACT Fire & Rescue expect it will take up to several hours to fully extinguish the blaze

ACT Fire & Rescue has now deployed the Bronto aerial firefighting appliance to assist with extinguishing the blaze at the rear of the property where access is difficult.

Crews have extinguished the fire, but there is still plenty of steam and smoke in the area and monitoring/cleanup efforts are expected to take several hours.
