Mick on a world tour to learn about urban renewal

Mick Gentleman

MICK Gentleman is off next week to lead business and industry leaders on a planning and Urban Renewal delegation to America and Canada.

The delegation will tour a number of cities that showcase best practice urban design, transport planning and sustainable development including Tucson, Seattle and Vancouver.

“I look forward to leading this important delegation, along with a number of local Canberra business and industry leaders. It is important that as we continue to grow as a city, we look at different ways of planning for this growth,” Mick said.

“Key elements of the delegation will include planning around sustainable transport networks, such as light rail, the creation of Urban Villages and how policy and planning levels stimulate economic activity.

“Canberra currently finds itself at an important stage of its development, whilst we must continue to stimulate economic growth through appropriate planning, we must also continue to activate our existing precincts and encourage urban renewal.

“The cities we are visiting all have similarities with Canberra, be that through their planning hierarchy, the shift away from a car dependent society, or the increase in the importance of creating a sustainable place for people to live.

“I am excited to see what lessons we can learn from this trip and am pleased that key industry leaders also see the value in learning from other cities,” Minister Gentleman concluded.

Other attendees on the delegation will include representatives from the Master Builders Association (ACT), the Australian Institute of Architects (ACT) including representatives from Cox architecture and the University of Canberra, Canberra Business Chamber and the Community Housing Canberra.

The Minister will report back to the Legislative Assembly following the trip.
