New bike racks around town

MEEGAN Fitzharris has unveiled four winning designs of a recent bike rack competition at the Kingston Foreshore.

“I would like to congratulate all four local designers who have worked hard in producing and manufacturing these amazing bike racks,” Meegan said.

“Not only do they serve the purpose of giving people somewhere to park their bikes, but they also brighten our streetscapes.

“The bike rack competition began in January 2016, and we received 27 entries, with the four winning artists each receiving $10,000 to make their design a reality. The four submissions were slightly amended to meet all construction and design standards.

“The four designs each have their own individual characteristics with styles that include a historic Penny Farthing high wheel bicycle; the Parliament House building on Capital Hill; an endless loop curve; and a bike rack with a cross like design.

“A panel of judges that included representatives from Arts ACT, Pedal Power and Transport Canberra and City Services assessed the designs against functionality, durability, safety as well as on-going maintenance and artistic merit.

“The four winning designs will each be located at four different areas of the ACT. They include Kingston Foreshore (intersection of Eyre Street and Eastlake Parade), Belconnen (Benjamin Way), Dickson Library (off Antill Street) and Tuggeranong Arts Centre (Reed Street). All winners were required to provide at least one bike rack for the Canberra community with the potential for more to be rolled out across other areas of the city in the future depending on its feasibility and feedback from the community,” Minister Fitzharris said.

The four successful artists and the locations for the new bike racks include:

  • Grace Maguire (industrial design student at UC) – one bike rack at Kingston
  • René Linssen (industrial designer) – four bike racks at Belconnen
  • Nicholas Tierney (student at Dickson College) – one bike rack at Dickson
  • Janet Long (sculptor / designer) – two bike racks at Tuggeranong.

“Congratulations to all our winners, it’s great to see people getting excited about active travel and making it fun and interesting for our city,” said Minister Fitzharris.
