MEEGAN Fitzharris says Oaks Estate residents are set to benefit from new bus services, a new public toilet and a new heritage walk.

“The ACT Government is committed to providing high quality local services for Oaks Estate residents,” Meegan said.

“I am pleased to announce we’ve reached agreement with QCityTransit to provide improved bus services from Monday (25 July 2016) for Oaks Estate residents, allowing them to connect more easily with Woden and the City via Queanbeyan interchange.

“Three additional timetabled 840 QCity services will take passengers to Queanbeyan interchange where patrons can then take the 830 service to City or the 831 service to Woden. Residents can also access the 840 service for return services on demand.

“Customers can transfer their tickets from QCity Transit to ACTION by purchasing a cash fare ticket from QCity Transit and, within 90 minutes of purchase, presenting their ticket to the ACTION driver when boarding, along with proof of their Oaks Estate address. They can also transfer their tickets from ACTION to QCity by purchasing a single fare or validating their MyWay card on an ACTION bus and then presenting this to the QCity driver along with proof of address.”

“Offsite fabrication work is also set to commence by the end of this month on a new toilet in Gillespie Park in a joint project between the ACT Government, Commonwealth Government and the Oaks Estate Progress Association.

“The popularity and location of Gillespie Park has identified a need for public toilet facilities. I’m pleased to say ACT Government staff have successfully worked with the Oaks Estate Progress Association to deliver these facilities for the local community.

“The $70,000 project has been funded by the ACT Government ($40,000), a grant from the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development’s Stronger Communities Programme ($20,000) as well as cash and in-kind support from the Oaks Estate Progress Association ($10,000). The ACT Government will meet ongoing maintenance and operational costs, while the Association will open and close the toilets each day.

“This great project shows what can be achieved when different levels of government come together to work with the community on achieving a shared outcome. It is anticipated the toilets will be completed by November, in time for the busy summer period. They will provide a welcome addition to the park and encourage more people to visit and enjoy it for longer periods.

“I can also reveal that recreational opportunities will be further enhanced for local residents with improvements planned for the Oaks Estate river corridor heritage walking trail. The ACT Government has allocated $230,000 for the design and construction of improvements, including path drainage, interpretative signage and new stopping points, to the current informal walking trail.

“Construction work is expected to commence in September and be completed by November 2016.

“These projects will be great for the Oaks Estate community, and I thank the Association for their assistance in helping turn them into a reality,” Minister Fitzharris said.
